about

If The Messiah was the heaviest song instrumentally, this is the heaviest one emotionally.

The original lyrics by Ian Caruthers were deeply personal, so I couldn't tell that story. Instead, I used the work he did as a jumping off point to figure out what I wanted to say.

As I worked with the lyrics, the song revealed itself to be about how some of us shield ourselves from the Black Lives Matter movement. The BLM message is powerful and painful; and we all need to hear it and understand it for what it is, rather than downplay it or have a knee jerk reaction against it.

lyrics

I can feel the stares, the vacant eyes
such apathy, no room for compromise
Now all that we’ve fought for is lost
Burnt to cinders it’s all but gone
our principles, cast aside
a thousand times

Can't you hear the cries
Of the broken human race
They wade into the tide
While we avert our gaze

Blindsided by this torrent of obsidian and blue
React in ignorance as they're destined to
We journey through these waves of chaos
But we have lost our way
in the empty space within this inconsistency
Blue is all they see

"I can't breathe," he said, a fading plea
such disregard and animosity
Untouchable, no recourse
and no remorse

Can't you hear the cries
Of the broken human race
They wade into the tide
While we avert our gaze

We look away
