about

This is the oldest song on the album — it was originally a Broken Self song.

I was on the fence about including it right up until I tracked vocals for it; partially because much of it wasn't originally written by me, and partially because the songwriting reflects a maximalist style that doesn't reflect my current approach. But I adapted the lyrics to be about the process of breathing new life into old songs, and loved the result. Very meta!

I considered a few album title options, but the one that stood out the most was taken from the chorus of this song: "The abandoned and decayed | reassembled and remade"

lyrics

Locked deep within
for so long that all the cells have been replaced
Buried in the darkness,
deserted with no compass

Searching deep within
Shine the light and look for reflection
Hello neglected one,
now your time has come

Let's begin a new existence

The abandoned and decayed,
reassembled and remade
Combing through what has survived
Iteration until they're all revived

Carving away
excess and superfluity
Don't cut into bone
Leave the core alone

Take what was, and make it real
Uncover and reveal
your voice
the sound
of being
resounds once again

Liberation from obscurity
Now go, live free

The abandoned and decayed,
reassembled and remade
Combing through what has survived
Iteration until they're all revived
