about

This one is lyrically a little sacrilegious; it's about how the idea of an afterlife is used to hook people into devoting themselves to religion from a young age.

I have a lot of thoughts about religion. Though I'm overall not a fan, I don't think it is inherently evil. I think the communal aspect is wonderful, as are the virtuous ideas. I just don't think it should be imposed on young people; they should be at an age where they are capable of deciding for themselves.

Musically, the chorus vocals accidentally came together in a way that reminded me of a church choir, and I added an organ to reinforce the guitar parts. Theming!

This is one of the more subtly complex songs from a rhythmic perspective; the drums play a 4:6 polyrhythm in a few spots, and the second measure of each chorus drops a beat.

Though the bridge recontextualizes and expands on the guitar lead from the theme, it was actually written in the bridge first.

This song was originally my attempt at ripping off Cave In (the working title was "Shave On"). It just shows that even when you try and directly copy something, it will often turn into something completely different!

lyrics

It starts out when they're young
and receptive to misguided tongues
Gotta teach them that the stakes are high
How will you spend your afterlife?

The self-sustaining cycle of ignorance and lies
Your pastors are wolves in sheep's attire

Let's hope that you were righteous

Leave your earnings in the bowl
This is merely heaven's toll
So the parish and its order
can continue to prosper

The self-sustaining cycle of ignorance and lies
Your pastors are wolves in sheep's attire

Once your organs
no longer function
A magical force
will then draw you forth

Where you will be judged
No more flesh and blood
Now that it's come to this
Let's hope that you were righteous
